American Steak

3 hours of sleep at night is really working out for me. The sun rises an hour earlier here, and the time is ahead by an hour, so it is throwing me off by 2 hours. I'm still adjusting to that.

Today we were out the door by 4am and on our way to Culebra, a neighboring island, with incredible beaches! The ferry runs 3 times a day, 4am, 9am, and 4pm. So we arrived to the ticket line at 530am and were the first in line! It filled up quickly too. On a Wednesday like today it was a reasonable crowd, but during peak season is trickier. A purchased ticket doesn't guarantee your seat, it's getting in line early.

The ferry ride took an hour, and it was choppy  (good thing Dad wasn't on it) and really coldly air conditioned. We tried to catch up on some sleep, and about halfway someone shouted "whale!" and everyone jumped up to the left side. I didn't see any whale. All I could think was "this is how the ferry tips over."

As we disembarked the shuttles and taxis are waiting to give tourists a ride to a beach of their choice- we're headed to Flamenco!

Found Leah and Ben!
are we there yet?
on Culebra
almost there
It was a fantastic beach! The water is so blue, and clear! The sand is soft and warm. Casie and I immediately introduced ourselves to the Ocean, and we hit it off.

We had packed sunscreen and snacks and snorkel gear, and had a blast! I saw lots of pretty blue, yellow,.and striped fish, and a black spiky urchin. Jean and I spotted 3 conch shells: one had a big pinchy crab inside, another was smaller and empty, and the third was enormous and still had the conch. I was really hoping to meet a sea turtle, but didn't happen. It was windy, which made the water restless and more difficult to snorkel. I kept drifting into the coral which I wasn't supposed to touch to avoid damaging it, and it was sharp (I scraped my hand).

This part of the island is popular for camping too, which seems like a great way to spend the weekend. The "campground" is $7 a day, has a bathhouse, and you can pitch a tent or string a hammock. And the beach is yours! Jean says at night the view of the stars is incredible. Next time, Culebra.

What was your favorite part of Culebra ladies?
C - taking in the scenery, like the pretty blue, clean water! I designed a new world house, it will sit on the mountain and have a natural waterslide down to that beach.

G - Sitting in the sun, and watching the waves. And then get into the water, it feels refreshing!
